Weekend Twelve preview
It's the most exciting time of the year as we have made it to the last month of the regular season. We are previewing all of the top series from Weekend Twelve!
Battle in the Desert
#1 UCLA at #18 Arizona State
The Bruins visit the Sun Devils in the desert with a lot on the line for both teams. The Bruins, despite being the unanimous number one team in the country, are sitting at third in the Pac-12 behind Oregon State and Stanford. Meanwhile, after one of the hottest starts in the country, Arizona State has hit a mid-season slump. A series win over UCLA would solidfy their postseason position and put them back in the host conversation.
Big XII Race
#11 Texas Tech at Oklahoma
With the Red Raiders trailing the Baylor Bears in the Big XII race by 1.5 games, Texas Tech will be looking to get the road series win over Oklahoma. The Sooners are sitting on the bubble and could help solidfy their Regional chances by taking down Texas Tech. Regardless of the outcome, both teams will get a strength of schedule boost from this series.
TCU at #19 West Virginia
With TCU's season dead in the water, the Horned Frogs will be looking to play spolier on the road against West Virginia. The Mountaineers have won five straight Big XII series and finish the year with TCU and Kansas State. Winning two more Big XII series could put West Virginia in position to host.
Big Ten Showdown
#22 Indiana at Illinois
Indiana is 0.5 games back of first place Michigan in the Big Ten standings and will have to take at least one against Illinois to keep within range of the regular season crown. Illinois is the highest RPI team in the Big Ten at 21, and they should be in good place for an at-large bid if they can keep their conference record above .500 (currently 8-7).
#15 Ole Miss at #12 LSU
Coming off a sweep of Texas A&M, Ole Miss has moved to 13-8 in the SEC, tied with LSU and Mississippi State. It is never easy to win a series at the Box, but doing so would likely lock up Ole Miss's postseason bid. If the Tigers take the series, they will add another line to the hosting resume.
#27 Missouri at #24 Tennessee
Missouri and Tennesse are two teams that cannot afford to lose an SEC series. At 10-10-1 in conference Missouri has a little more wiggle room than Tennessee, but with a series at Vanderbilt looming next week, they need to take two out of three from the Volunteers. Tennessee is three games under .500 in conference at 9-12. With three SEC series left, they will hope to pick up at least a game in conference this week.
Florida at #9 Georgia
Florida is currently one of our last eight teams in the tournament. There is some precedent for a team with a sub-.500 conference record making a Regional, but the Gators know they can't slip too far below that mark. Georgia is their toughest remaining test, and they will need at least one win on the road. Georgia was just swept by Mississippi State last weekend. However, with Florida, Auburn, and Alabama left on their schedule, Georgia still has a good chance to win the SEC regular season title.
#7 Mississippi State at #16 Texas A&M
Mississippi State was swept by Arkansas two weekends ago and swept Georgia last weekend. It will be interesting to see which team shows up to College Station to take on the Aggies who were swept by Ole Miss last weekend. Texas A&M will be looking to defend home field and put themselves back in the host conversation.
#5 Arkansas at Kentucky
Arkansas sits atop the SEC, tied with Vanderbilt, and rolls into Kentucky having won 10 of their last 11 games. With series against LSU and Texas A&M left on the schedule, Arkansas will be looking to engrain themselves as the SEC West frontrunner with a series win at Kentucky.
Mid-Majors to Watch
FAU at Southern Miss
Both of these teams are in the tournament in our latest projects, but neither wants to leave their Regional berth to chance. At 15-6 in conference, Florida Atlantic is 2 games behind the 17-4 Southern Miss. A series win for the Owls would close the gap and give a big boost to their postseason resume. A series win for Southern Miss would nearly lock up their Regional bid.
Indiana State at Illinois State
In what may be a surprise to some, Indiana State and Illinois State are currently tied for first place in the Missouri Valley at 9-3. With RPIs of 34 and 32, respectively, both teams could be deserving of at-large bids. However, with Dallas Baptist a few spots ahead in the RPI (28), it is tough to find a path where both Indiana State and Illinois State make a Regional. This series could be the tiebreaker come Selection Monday.
Non-Conference Match Ups
#28 Oklahoma State at #4 Oregon State
In one of the most intriguing match ups of the weekend, Oklahoma State travels to Corvallis to take on Oregon State. After getting swept by Texas Tech last weekend, the Cowboys are looking for a bounce-back weekend. A strong showing against Oregon State could put them back in the hosting conversation. Meanwhile, Oregon State is hunting for a top eight seed. A series win againt Oklahoma State could help secure that for the Beavers.
#21 UC Irvine at Iowa
UC Irvine at Iowa is a battle of two teams in need of a series win. UC Irvine has slipped to 53 in the RPI, and Iowa is at 60. A series loss for UC Irvine could place them on the wrong side of the bubble, while a series win for Iowa might get them in the last eight in.
