part V: Power Rankings #5-8

Opening Day is this Friday, so we're taking a look at which mid-major conferences you should keep an eye out for this season!

When it comes to college baseball, it may be unfair to call the American Athletic Conference a mid-major. At #5 in the Conference Power Rankings and only 7 rankings spots behind the ACC, the American (team average of 67.0) is likely a four or five bid conference. East Carolina, UNCONN, and Houston are likely tournament teams, and UCF, USF, and Wichita State will all compete for bids as well.

Similarly, the #6 Big West (team average of 84.7) is also a 3+ bid conference. However, after Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, and Long Beach State, there is a steeper dropoff in the conference. Perhaps 2019 will see one of the bottom six teams rise to the top tier within the Big West.

#7 Conference USA (team average of 99.7) is led by Southern Miss, but don't sleep on the rest of the conference. Lousisana Tech and Rice both match up against several local foes, and it wouldn't be surprising to see them take down Big XII and SEC teams.

The Big Ten comes in at #8 in the Conference Power Rankings. While the top four teams in conference are all eying the NCAA Tournament, the bottom of the conference brings the team average down to 104.2. Don't let the poor conference average fool you, though, the top of the Big Ten has teams with the talent to win a Regional.
